La jeune femme se tenait les bras levés au-dessus de la tête à l porte de la boutique. Face à elle, un homme la tenait en respect au bout de son revolver. Il était vêtu d’un long imperméable couleur mastic au col relevé et d’un borsalino rabaissé sur les yeux. Je me croyais revenue dans les années 50 avec le détective Malone . Mais, lors, cette jeune-femme était-elle une déliquante ?
Il faisait chaud à Fernandina en ce jour d’octobre. Les gens passaient tranquillement leur chemin. Je criais : « Tu peux venir, j’ai pris la photo ». La jeune-femme se dirigea vers moi, souriante, laissant l’homme à son éternité de statue. La ville de Fernandina à Amelia Island était, au début du 19ème siècle, un port maritime prospère. C’était aussi la première et unique ville des Etat-Unis à être sous 8 drapeaux différents : celui de la couronne française, anglaise, espagnole, le drapeau des Etats-Unis, de
Tout changea en 1862 quand les forces confédérées furent obligées de quitter l’île. Avec l’arrivée des troupes fédérales l’économie de Fernandina s’évanouit. Son port, ses boutiques, ses magasins, ses docks, furent détruits et le chemin de fer sévèrement endommagé. En 1870, le port maritime devint actif et prospère en se basant sur le transport maritime, la pêche des crevettes et le tourisme. Un autre désastre détruisit les structures originales en bois depuis le port jusqu’à la troisième rue : le feu. Aujourd’hui c’est une ville touristique agréable ou il fait bon se promener dans la rue principale bordée de tout type de boutiques comme celui mentionné plus haut qui est un magasin d’antiquité. Une impressionnante quantité d’églises se suivent ou se font face dans cette même rue. J’en ai compté jusqu’à 6 ! Je suis triste parce que j’ai oublié de prendre une photo du port qui était juste derrière moi. Quand je m’en suis souvenue, mon rouleau était arrivé à sa fin. Bienvenue au Marina Seafood Restaurant Réellement sympatique et bon de chez bon. Le premier restaurant 5 étoiles de la partie Nord-Est de Floride ! Il fut construit après le feu dévastateur par le Major Duryee qui avait servi dans les forces militaires de l’Union et était retourné à Fernandina.
C’était l’époque ou tout le monde pouvait être le premier en quelque chose…

He was dressed with a long trenchcoat color cement with a raised collar and a borsalino lowered on its eyes. I thought of myself returning to the Fifties with the detective Malone. The weather was hot in Fernandina in this day of October. The passerbys kept on their way quietly. then I shouted : « Come on, I took the picture !»
The young woman came towards me smiling, leaving the man with its eternity of statue.
The town of Fernandina in the early 1800’s was a thriving seaport town. It was the first and only city in the United States to have been ruled under eight different flags representing its numerous rulers : the French Crown, the british Crown, the Spanish Crown, the United States, the Confederacy and…. All changed in 1862 when the Confederate forces were forced to abandon the island. With the advance of the Federal troops, Fernandina’s economy was wrecked. Its port, shops and warehouses were destroyed. The railroad was heavily damaged. By 1870, the port once again became a bustling and thriving seaport relying on the shipping, shrimping , and tourist trade. Another disaster destroyed the original wooden structures from the docks to 3rd street : fire.
I am sad because i forgot to take a picture of the port which was just behind me. When i remembered it, my roller had arrived at its end. Welcome to the Marina Seafood Restaurant, really sympatical and good, good, good… The first five stars restaurant in Northeast Florida !
Built after the devastating fire by a major who had served with the Occupational Forces of the Union Army and returned to Fernandina. The Custom House occupied this space until the early 1900’s, then the Duryee Building was also home of the oldest newspaper in the State of Florida. The First Bank of Florida was located in the building and later became the First National Bank of Florida. In the early 1900’s a restaurant was established becoming the « First Landmark for Fine Foods and Excellent Dining » At that time everyone could be the first in something…

Today, Fernandina is a touristic city on Amelia Island where it feels good to skirt the principal street bordered with all kind of stores. An impressing number of churches are lining up or facing each other on this main street. I counted 6 of them.
